The controversy over Sally Hemings’
relationship with Thomas Jefferson initially arose in 1802 during Jefferson’s
first term as President of the United States.
In the more than two centuries since, it has occasionally abated for
short periods, only to return as new documents, oral histories, and scientific
discoveries come into use.

Mary Jefferson is the
great-great-great granddaughter of Eston Hemings Jefferson, the youngest of six children of Sally Hemings, a
slave, and Thomas Jefferson, her owner and third President of the United
States. Ms. Jefferson has lived in
Diamond Bar and Anaheim Hills for almost 40 years and is a retired Chino Valley
USD teacher. She earned a bachelors
degree in education from Western Illinois University and a masters in education
from CSUF, where she was named Outstanding Graduate Student of 1981. As a student, Ms. Jefferson was listed in
Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities; she is currently a member of
numerous organizations, including AAUW, the Sierra Club, DAR, and the League of
Women Voters. She is also a member of the
choir at Anaheim United Methodist Church and a volunteer usher at the
Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Ms.
Jefferson was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show in 1998.
Randy Seaver will explore
the research journey required to find the ancestors of his wife's
great-grandmother, Jane (Whittle) McKnew (1847-1921). Born in Australia
to English parents and married in Gold Country, she had 11 children, survived
the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and died in San Francisco. Come watch
Randy unveil a fascinating family history worthy of a “Who Do You Think You
Are?” episode!

A native San Diegan, graduate of San
Diego State University in Aerospace Engineering, and retired aerodynamics
engineer with a 38-year career at Rohr/Goodrich in Chula Vista, Randy’s
ancestry includes colonial New England and Upper Atlantic, colonial German,
French and Dutch; and several 19th century English immigrants.

Randy's activities include serving the
Chula Vista Genealogical Society (former President, currently Newsletter Editor
and Research Chairman); speaking to genealogy groups; teaching genealogy
classes; and writing the Genealogy 2.0 column for the FGS’s FORUM

Enjoy this time, talk about traditions, find out how everyone celebrated the holidays when they were 10 years old.

I lived with my parents and my younger sister and brother. We were here in California and all of our extended family lived in Alabama or Louisiana so Christmas was always just the five of us. We had a house with a floor furnace located in a central hall. You could look through the slats and see some of the tree and, as all our gifts came from santa and they were never wrapped, this was were we hung out until we could get our parents out of bed. Christmas was one of the few times we had a formal dinner and Christmas is when I learned to set a table: silverware 1 inch from the edge of the table, napkin placed with the fold in so you could easily grab the edge, knife and spoon on the right, fork on the left. What was your Christmas like?
GSNOCChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14949314415047329228noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4787526042354857566.post-22515112031992579512011-11-06T14:27:00.000-08:002011-11-06T14:29:13.754-08:00NANCY HUEBOTTER Adding Timelines to your Genealogy Tool Kit <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:"Times New Roman"; JOEL WEINTRAUB Preparing for the 1940 Census

Preparing for the 1940 Census

The 1940 U. S. census introduced sampling, organized publicity, and an emphasis on economic questions. Some standard questions were dropped, while new ones were added. The changes were not without controversy. The census is being digitized by the National Archives and will be available on-line. It is unlikely there will be a name index available on opening day (April 2, 2012), so initially, geographic means for finding people will be necessary. Dr. Weintraub will discuss the 1940 enumeration and its questions, the on-line 1940 geographic tools he has produced for the Morse One-Step website, and why we wait 72 years to see a U.S. population census.

Born and raised in Manhattan, Dr. Joel Weintraub is Professor of Biology Emeritus at California State University, Fullerton. He became interested in genealogy about 12 years ago, and volunteered for nine years at the National Archives. Joel transcribed streets within census districts in 2001 to help researchers search the 1930 U. S. census. In 2002, he was joined by David Kehs and Stephen Morse; together, they have produced several on-line census-searching utilities for both the federal and New York State censuses on the Morse One-Step website <www.stevemorse.org>.</www.stevemorse.org>

Plan NOW to attend this informative event!!

GSNOCChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14949314415047329228noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4787526042354857566.post-44936456077258480052010-11-12T08:42:00.000-08:002010-11-12T09:01:45.142-08:00Ancestry.com Military Records Free Nov. 11-14

Ancestry.com is providing free access to its military records collection from November 11 through November 14th.
